Fifty years ago, the U.S. table tennis team was invited by its Chinese counterpart to visit China. The U.S. players landed in Beijing in 1971, becoming the first delegation to visit China since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
Table tennis fans gathered at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington state, on November 30, 2021, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ping pong diplomacy. Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the same place in 2015. The high school’s principal, Patrick Erwin, referred to X’i’s letter in which he wrote: “Young people are the future and hope of a country, and friendship between the people of our countries needs to be carried forward by the younger generation.”
